Lessons Learned One Mile at a Time
By: Zac Miller, REALTOR® | Realty ONE Group Cornerstone
Distance running taught me far more than how to finish a race.
If you asked me what distance running taught me, I probably wouldn't start by talking about running itself. I'd tell you it taught me patience. It taught me discipline. Most importantly, it taught me that the biggest goals in life are rarely accomplished all at once. They're built one decision, one mile, and one day at a time.
I spent years running, eventually earning the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level and later qualify for the Boston Marathon, one of the most prestigious races in the world. Those accomplishments are something I'm proud of, but when I look back, they aren't what stand out the most. What I remember are the early mornings, the miles no one saw, and the quiet consistency it took to get there.
At the time, I thought I was simply becoming a better runner. Looking back, I realize I was learning lessons that would shape the way I approach every part of my life.
Success Happens Long Before Anyone Sees It
Most people only see race day. They don't see the months, and often years, of preparation that make it possible. They don't see the workouts when your legs feel heavy, the days you question your progress, or the decision to get up and train when no one is watching.
Qualifying for the Boston Marathon doesn't happen because of one great run. It's the result of showing up consistently, trusting the process, and believing that today's effort will eventually pay off.
I've found that's true in almost every meaningful part of life. The accomplishments people celebrate are usually built through hundreds of small decisions that happen long before anyone notices. Whether you're building a career, raising a family, or working toward a personal goal, meaningful progress almost always happens behind the scenes.
Every Journey Has Its Own Pace
One of the greatest lessons running taught me was to stop comparing my journey to someone else's. Every runner starts from a different place, has different strengths, and is working toward different goals. The only comparison that really matters is whether you're becoming a little stronger, a little wiser, or a little more disciplined than you were yesterday.
I believe the same is true in real estate. Every buyer and seller has a different story. Some people find the right home quickly, while others need more time. Some transactions move smoothly, while others require patience and creative problem-solving.
Understanding People Has Always Interested Me
That interest in people is one of the reasons I earned my degree in psychology. I've always been fascinated by what motivates us, how we make decisions, and how we respond when life doesn't go according to plan.
Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions many people will ever make. Excitement, uncertainty, stress, and hope can all exist at the same time. I've learned that people don't just need someone who understands contracts and negotiations. They need someone who listens, communicates honestly, and helps them stay focused when the process feels overwhelming.
Why I Chose Real Estate
Before becoming a full-time REALTOR®, I spent a few years working in the insurance industry. It was a valuable experience, but I realized I wanted a career where relationships came first and every day presented a new opportunity to help someone.
Real estate gives me that opportunity.
Every move represents a new chapter. Whether it's a first home, a growing family, a new job, or simply a fresh start, I enjoy helping people navigate those moments with confidence. There are challenges along the way, but that's part of the journey, and I enjoy helping clients work through them.
It's About More Than the Finish Line
Running taught me that success isn't defined by one moment. It isn't the medal, the personal record, or even crossing the finish line. Those moments are rewarding, but they're only possible because of everything that happened before them.
The same is true in life. The strongest relationships are built over time. Trust is earned through consistency. Confidence grows through preparation. The best outcomes rarely happen overnight.
Those are lessons I've carried with me as a husband, a father, and now as a full-time REALTOR®.
Final Thoughts
When I think back on the miles I've run, I don't remember every finish time or every race result. I remember the lessons they taught me. Patience. Discipline. Perseverance. Humility. Those lessons continue to shape who I am, and they're the same qualities I strive to bring to every client I have the privilege of serving.
Helping someone buy or sell a home isn't about getting to the closing table as quickly as possible. It's about helping them get there with confidence, knowing they made decisions that were right for them.
The finish line is important, but the journey is what makes it meaningful.
